This book is edited and published by an anonymous source specifically for Amazon, from somewhere in Poland. The front cover is a low resolution blown up image, and is extremely pixelated. This simply demonstrates the quality and effort put into the rest of the book. There are numerous typos in the book itself, as well as some incoherent type which I think was meant to be latin.Very disappointing.

Das Land wird von den Kolonialmächten geplündert. Die weißen Kolonialherren fühlen sich als die allmächtigen Herren über das Land und über Leben und Tod seiner Ureinwohner.Doch das ist nur der Rahmen der Geschichte. Alles dreht sich um einen erfolgreichen Elfenbeinsammler, der unermesslich viel dieses gefragten Produktes aus Gebieten herbeischafft, die nie ein Weißer betrat. Unter den Einheimischen wird er wie ein Häuptling verehrt. Der Seemann ist versessen darauf, diesen rätselhaften, wortgewaltigen und offenbar unbezwingbaren Herrn Kurtz kennenzulernen, mit ihm zu sprechen. Tief dringt der Erzähler mit seinem maroden kleinen Dampfschiff in das Land, den beängstigenden Dschungel vor. Überall lauern bedrohliche Gefahren, Untiefen, schwimmende Baumstämme, unerwartete Pfeilhagel aus dem dichten Wald heraus, dazu Fieber und Krankheit. Die Beschreibungen sind farbig und extrem realistisch, dabei beklemmend, wiederum fast unwirklich, teilweise traumartig verschwommen. Der Leser erfährt eigentlich nicht, warum es wirklich geht. Warum eigentlich der Herr Kurtz? Ist der Seemann auf der Suche nach sich selbst? Ein kluger Mensch schrieb , das Ganze spiele sich in der Seele des Erzählers ab. Die tiefen, undurchdringlichen Wälder, abweisend mit geheimnisvollem Trommeln und zeitweise durchscheinenden Lagerfeuern der Einheimischen. Der Fluss als der 'Fluss' des Lebens, der marode Dampfer als das kämpfende, sich abplagende eigentliche "'Ich"'. Wobei der Herr Kurtz das "'Über-Ich" ' im Sinne Freuds versinnbildlichen könnte. Vielleicht die Seele auf der Suche nach einem Sinn, nach einer Lösung, nach sich selbst?Aber egal. Ein absolut spannender, wunderbar zu lesender Roman von einem kundigen Seemann über die Seele eines leidenschaftlichen Seemannes geschrieben.

There is little to no information available about this article before you buy it, and even after you buy it you have to play detective before it becomes clear that it is in fact the 1634 (!) translation by Casaubon.2. The print is very small and so are the margins. Pages without line breaks are therefore the paradigm of "walls of text"3. It is written in what appears the be middle-aged English. This is not surprising since it is the 1634 translation.4. General sloppiness of print. Too few whitespace (e.g. between chapters) and the Greek words in the text are printed using similarly-looking Latin letters (!) so f.i. 'omega' is represented by a 'w'. The latter is, in my opinion, a true outrage.Bonus: then again, it costs only 5 euros... But in hindsight i would have gladly paid 10, even for the same sloppy print but a more modern translation.
While the book shares some fundamental values that each individual has, it does not go beyond these. This along with a bad translation makes the reading repetitive and unpleasant. I'd suggest for anyone seeking similar wisdom to turn to Poor Richard's Almanack by Benjamin Franklin. The book is more resourceful by covering a much wider spectrum of topics compared to the Meditations
Ich studiere im Master Afrikawissenschaften und habe das Buch als Studienschwerkpunkt im Bereich afrikanische Literatur gelesen. Es bietet einen tollen Einblick in die Sichtweise eines Europäers, der während der Kolonialzeit im Kongo als Kapitän ins Innere des Landes fährt. Das Werk ist eine autobiografische Erzählung des Autors. Die Beschreibungen seiner Eindrücke sind so ausdrucksstark, dass ich das Buch in einem Rutsch gelesen habe. Ein hervorragendes Werk, das die Veränderung der Sichtweise eines Mannes beschreibt, welcher das Leid, die Unterdrückung und die Erkundung eines neuen Landes miterlebt hat.
Ich bin von dem Buch sehr beeindruckt, vor allem mit den Erklärungen für schwierige Wörter.Leider sind hin und wieder noch einige Rechtschreibfehler im Text, die vom Herausgeber vermieden werden konnten. Triviale Fehler wie 'abd' anstelle von 'and' merkt sogar MS Word inzwischen.
Musste das buch für die uni kaufen für fast 12 euro so ein dermaßen ausgefranztes buch.Sauerei. Sehr schlechte Qualität
reading Meditations is peeking into a wiseman's notebook which wasnt meant to be a book. amusingly enough Marcus Aurelius advises against reading books in the second part of this 'book' twice already. but the beauty of this 'book' is exactly in the honest tone of a man who was thinking and writing to himself. and kudos to the translator Gregory Hayes who's kept the personal tone of writer and hasn't confused this work with a formal treatise of ancient philosophy.I gave it four stars and not five because I couldn't always agree with the author on all the points and advices he makes which are psychological in nature or otherwise science related rather than philosophical, and so are not matters of opinion and introspection and for me are to be settled only through experimental and scientific methods.
